Driving Safely During the Holidays

As you might expect, heavy holiday travel can increase the likelihood of being in an automobile accident. While you may be in a mad dash to finish your shopping or on the way to visit family, more than likely so is everyone else. So, here are some tips to help keep you and your family safe this holiday season.
· Remember the basics. While most days we all tend to let these rules slide, if your Driver’s Ed teacher was sitting next to you what would he/she say? Are your hands at ten and two? Following a safe distance behind the car in front of you? Using your turn signals correctly? AND more importantly are you going the correct speed?
· Stop other activities while driving. Focusing on the road instead of the usual distractions of eating, texting, or talking on your cell phone can help keep your driving under control and also help you react faster to a possible accident.
· Look out for other drivers. It’s quite possible that other drivers have had a little bit too much eggnog or are doing the things listed above. Don’t assume these other drivers are as in control as you are. Check traffic before proceeding at an intersection, and plan to be on the road during non-rush-hour times if possible.
· Follow the rules of the road. This one is simple, obey speed limits, wear your seat belt, and don’t drink and drive! This will help keep you safe as well as keep you ticket free this season.
